Premiering Aug 18. 2023 on all major streaming platforms, “Gravity” by Thomas Day is a heartfelt love ballad that depicts the cliché sentiments of being in love with a significant other. As a first-time listener of his music, I came in fully with no judgments as I prepared to indulge in his work. For context, Thomas Day hails from Nashville and began his work as a YouTuber, but according to his own website, he credits his love for music starting at the age of 9 and his upbringing. Albeit his appearance gives off the typical frat-boy persona, Thomas Day appears to constantly push his boundaries and dedicates himself to writing heartfelt music despite what others may have to say. Having a sense of his background, it’s time to transition to his awards and accomplishments.
Establishing himself primarily as a pop artist, Day has done exceptionally well for the Youtuber-turned-musician change. From uploading his first video titled, ‘Stay With Me- Sam Smith cover’ to his most famous; ‘Break My Heart Again - FINNEAS cover’, it’s safe to say that Day has had a somewhat humble beginning on the internet. While many could argue that following in this direction would have made him the typical YouTuber to feel that music is his calling, Day disproves this. Releasing his first popular single titled, “Overplayed” alongside many others, it provides one the following: Thomas Day is an accomplished singer. Period.
Going back to his newest single, “Gravity,” the song opens as the aforementioned piano ballad about the wonders of falling in love with a partner. The illusion of incorporating love and space with the concept of gravity makes the song cohere together pretty well. Likewise, I sensed there were small instances of nostalgia as the tempo and rhythm blended well with each other, as one listened to the song. Adding the choir in the background around the 2:11 mark, amplified the music more as the song reaches its climax. While I felt that this feature could have been used for the entirety of the song to give it more of a subtle harmonization, this was probably done to not take away from Day’s vocal performance.
All in all, my thoughts on this song are pretty straightforward- “Gravity” makes for a decent pop song. Likewise, I feel it has the potential of making the Billboard charts, but there are some areas where I feel Day could improve musically, such as his approach to being just a solid pop artist. Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that Day is still young, which provides the listeners with some good anticipation of whether his musical career and discography are worth giving a listen to. In short, I highly suggest giving this song a listen.
